Hi Ian,

Thanks for your response and apologies for my belated reply. I was thinking, in terms of keeping the database central, to have the Qt on Rails app connect to a RESTful service over the web - with the RESTful service being home to the database. You could use something like ActiveResource to make such a connection - so instead of the Qt on Rails app being ActiveRecord-based, it would be ActiveResource-based. I had a bit of a chance to hack on this kind of thing at Akademy but haven't quite finished the first version yet. I'm working on having such a Qt on Rails app hooking into a RESTful Bioinformatics service. The nice thing is that the it doesn't matter what technology is used on the server - could be anything from Sinatra to Java - I know which I'd prefer :-) Will have to focus on getting something demo-able finished soon!

I think I might have shared this with you when you first announced the project, but at my previous job at a travel company I worked on a Ruby on Rails app and quickly got fed up with all the AJAX hassles. Basically you can spend all day easily on some sort of drop-down menu and it still won't look as professional as what you can easily do in a few minutes with Qt. The web wasn't built with application UI in mind and it really shows when you try to develop one in it.

My hair-brained idea was (since it was a LAN and no real security issues) was to have a QtRuby app that would use ActiveRecord to all access a central postgresql database. Never got to it since I switched jobs at that point.

Giving your users direct access to the database isn't a solution that scales obvious. But if you are interested in attracting Rails developers (as opposed to just KDE devs looking at a good way to develop local database-oriented apps) you need some way to keep the database central. I haven't used Ruby on Rails in a couple of years, maybe there's an easier way already?
