One more thing that cropped up for was that I was having a sound issue in that had no sound at all! Now, I can't quite explain how this problem occurred but before I went on holidays everything was working and when I came back this started happening - I think perhaps my laptop was jealous that I hadn't brought it on holidays :)

Anyway, to fix this I went to this site http://sathyasays.com/2007/12/09/fixing-no-sound-bug-on-dell-inspiron-1520-in-ubuntu-gutsy/ and tried solution 1.

However, at the same time I started playing with the ALSA mixer and turning up the volume on everything as I worked through this guide http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=205449

So my recommendation is to work through that latter guide and if that fails then try the suggestions from the first site (I would have thought that seeing as we already installed the linux-backports-modules-generic that this would make no difference anyway).

One of the issues I had on installing was that Dell had already used up most of the partitions on the harddrive. You can only have 4 primary partitions. The trick is to set up at least one partition as 'extended' and then as many logical partitions as you like within this extended partition.

Note: Windows can't boot out of logical partitions but fortunately Linux can so stick all your Linux stuff in logical partitions. Note: The Kubuntu 7.10 installer never mentions extended partitions - just go ahead and create and use logical ones and it will do the rest for you. Be sure to have a good understanding of what you're doing however and google around on the subject (disclaimer: The Irish Penguin has never liked responsibility and takes none if you some break or blow up your computer!). For a great overview on partitioning see http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/file/structPartitions-c.html

Happy hacking!
